A lifetime movie with a Netflix budget. Fatal affair cast. I stumbled upon The Old Guard on Netflix, AND IT WAS THE BEST MOVIE I'VE SEEN IN A WHILE. Fatal affair trailer. "Fatal Affair" 2020) is an American drama-thriller directed by Peter Sullivan. He is a man notorious for making suspense-less thrillers, snooze-fest Hallmark-esque RomComs, and horrible B-tier horror movies in equal measure. It stars Nia Long of "Are We There Yet? fame and Omar Epps, a "House M.D." alum. With Stephen Bishop as the husband, it's a cast stacked by mostly B-list celebrities.
The movie revolves around Ellie, a lawyer who has a loving husband, a successful daughter in college, and a beautiful new house. She seemingly has the perfect life. That is until an old friend from college reenters her life. What at first seems like a friendly, fated reconnection soon turns into a desperate game of cat and mouse when the friend becomes obsessed with her after a night of misplaced passion. Sounds juicy, right? Well, I can assure you, it's not. Formulaic to a fault, this movie is almost exactly identical to every Lifetime Movie Network film with a similar premise. Here are some of the thoughts I wrote down while watching this the first time:

• "They really used the Hell's Kitchen sound effect. Lmao. li>
• "This hoe really snuck into the house. li>
• "They really miscast the villain. I. li>
• "Bruh. Courtney's stupid. Wtf. li>
• "He about to kill her. li>
• "Why don't people ever finish the bad guys off after knocking them down. li>

The first gripe I have with this movie is the story. A woman in her late 30s/early 40s reconnects with an old friend. Things start out innocent until it takes an inappropriate, passionate turn. She breaks it off. He becomes obsessed. He starts killing people. Blah blah blah. It's a movie formula that has been sucked dry by Hollywood for so long, I'm surprised Hollywood hasn't hired Mia Khalifa as a lead consultant. It even has a scene where Ellie's best friend gets assaulted by the bad guy. Happens in every movie like this. There's no nuance whatsoever. Act I, Act II, and Act III. That's it. Nothing more. Nothing less. Gross.

It certainly doesn't help that the movie is full of conveniences only there to move the plot along. After saying, No. I don't trust you, Ellie goes on to dance with David, get close to him, and almost do him in a club bathroom. After seeing David showcase some psychotic behavior, Ellie tries to avoid him, but doesn't bother to get a restraining order on him. After years of friendship, Ellie's best friend Courtney decides to believe David over her after only dating him for like, a week. I'm sure the D wasn't that poppin, sweetie. The husband hears David say "Some men would kill to have a woman like her, but somehow doesn't hear him talking about what he'd do to the man who's touching the woman he loves in a menacing tone. The husband's weak and sucks at fighting, even though he's jacked beyond belief. It just doesn't make sense.

The acting in the movie is pretty for Omar Epps. His experience on "House M.D." did not translate well at all to this movie. He is horrifically miscast as the main villain. He's good at playing the suave playboy, but when he has to deliver villainous lines, he falls apart. With no conviction or charisma behind his threats, I couldn't help but laugh rather than quake with fear. It legitimately sounded like he was reading his lines for the very first time. All in all, this movie wasn't awful, but it also wasn't good. The only decent parts of the movie was the acting (not Omar Epps) and the soundtrack. That's nowhere near enough to make a good movie. It also wasn't bad enough for me to get much of a laugh out of it. To me, some of the worst kinds of movies are average movies and meh movies. Nothing inspired and masterful, but nothing ironically brilliant, either. Without those, all you're left with is boredom so intense, you can't help but check your phone, your watch, or literally anything else around you just to stay awake. Why should Peter Sullivan or the writers give a crap, though? No matter what, they're still making money. After watching this movie twice, I finally noticed something impressive about it. Peter Sullivan caters to the ever-faithful audience of these movies perfectly. With a plot this derivative, middle-aged housewives are bound to love it!

Made my on-the-spectrum child and the other come watch for a few minutes, expecting them to wow over the competition for about 4 mins, then wander off. We all go sucked into it, and Max's story and parents made me tear up. Feliks comes off as a sweet bloke as well, and i wish them all the best! Really feel-good without being overly sappy.
